Our first-ever salon entitled “Levelling the Playing Field: Democratising Education” was held at the Hive on September 10, 2014. Showcasing two key TED talks, the first by Daphne Koller, Co-Founder of Coursera.org on “What We are Learning from Online Education", and the second by Bunker Roy, Founder of the Barefoot College, on “Learning from a Barefoot Movement”, the discussion was moderated by Professor Gordon Matthews, Chair of the Anthropology Department, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and author of Global Culture/Individual Identity: Searching for Home in the Cultural Supermarket.
Attendees watched and debated the TED talks shown, discussing what it really means to “democratize education”. Do we actually need “more education”? Or do we simply need to change the way we relate to education?
